This was an interesting bathroom remodel. The old fiberglass tub was removed and the new shower area to replace the unit was widened over 6 inches into a utility chase going to the second floor. Most old tub/shower units are plumbed with a 1 1/2" drain. The mistake made by most of these "one day" remodelers is not bringing the shower up to code with a 2" drain, which I did here. Also, all new PEX plumbing was run from the crawlspace to the shower valve. The mixing valve sends water to the shower wand near the bench seat at the right of the unit. The owner wanted to keep the low vanity, so I framed it 3 1/2" higher and the granite installer wrapped the front to cover the framing. The shower was tiled with 12" x 24" porcelain and penny mosaic on the floor. The bathroom floor was tiled with the same 12x24. All Schluter products were used; shower pan, drain kit, niche, 1/2" Kerdi board, Kerdi band, etc. This creates a water tight, leak proof shower. Schluter Ditra uncoupling membrane was used on the bathroom floor. I recently had a good friend receive a bid to remodel their 36" x 36" shower unit with one of the "one day" installers. The bid was higher than what I will charge and my tile shower will add greater resale that a resin walled shower unit. My shower takes longer, but is a better product.
