What does "barnyard mix" mean?
This is our definition of what we call a "barnyard mix," aka "rainbow hatching eggs."
We free-range. Every. Single. Day. We have five roosters with one being full-blooded Ayam Cemani, one being full-blooded Easter Egger (from hatchery), one being full-blooded Americana (from hatchery), and the other two are mixed breeds of White Leghorn, Ayam Cemani, and Easter Egger born here at our home.
All of our chickens free range, which means that our roosters "mingle" with all of our hens -- all day long. The offspring are mostly going to be a mixed breed and not full-blooded. This is what we call a "barnyard mix." We believe some people also refer to this as "Rainbow Hatching Eggs." We have a barnyard mix because we do not keep our full-blooded hens locked up with one specific full-blooded rooster for an extended period of time to get full-blooded hatching eggs. We may try doing this later this year for our Ayam Cemani Chickens, but for now, we are not able to do this.
********************
What breeds make up our flock?
Currently, we have 36 chickens, which includes five roosters. Our eggs will be mixed breeds because these chickens are free-range and all mingle with each other all day long. (Our flock is normal-sized adult chickens -- no small bantam breeds are among our flock.)
Current Breeds as of 01/2026:
White Leghorn
Gray Leghorn
Rhode Island Red
Ayam Cemani
Cream Legbars
Easter Eggers
Olive Eggers
Americana
Barred Rock
Copper Maran
Buff Orpington
Lavender Orpington
Comets
Mixed Breeds
Happy Hatching!!!
