About our Birds:
These are our 2nd generation from eggs we purchased from Southwest Gamebirds ‘JMF Jumbo Brown’ line. When selecting breeders, we cull for weight at 3, 4, 6, 8 weeks and ‘as needed’ following that. Our birds are averaging 11-12 oz at just six weeks of age. The majority of our hens fall within the 13-14 oz range at full maturity (with some being 15-17 oz). Eggs are generally 14-16g on average. We practice ‘hard culling’ for any aggression outside of standard breeding/pecking order behavior. We strive to breed birds who grow quickly to true jumbo weights, lay large eggs with no prolapse issues, and are not aggressive. Our jumbo browns can be feather sexed by 3 weeks of age and are mature at 6-8 weeks of age.

We also have older chicks, laying hens, and/or breeding sets available (5-7 sets available), as well as a few other colors.
*Note: mature birds have been in colony pens over winter and may have some feather loss on the back/head from mating. (Laying hens $12/each, Breeding sets: 4 hens/1 roo $50/set, 5 hens/1 roo $60/set)


Best results are reached by using the following:
-chicks will need a dependable heat source for the first 3-4 weeks, depending on nighttime temperatures
-feeding high-quality game bird starter (26-30% protein) for the first 3-6 weeks, switching to game bird layer (20-22% protein) after the first egg appears.
-never let them run out of food
-never let them run out of water (additionally, small chicks should NEVER be given cold water)
-housing your quail in appropriate pens (either aviary-type enclosures with 4 foot ceilings OR cages no greater than 12 inches high…avoid any enclosures with ceilings between 12”-4’, which allow flush momentum to be great enough to cause fatal injury)
-providing 16 hours of ‘daylight’ to stimulate egg production
-keep at 3-5 birds per square foot in smaller layer cages; or 1 square foot per bird for aviary settings
